Burning Bush – Typology of the Cross

Exodus 3:2
There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.

Exodus 3:7-8
The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.

The burning bush that Moses saw was a typology of the Cross.

First, God said “I have come down to rescue” in Exodus 3:7.

This becomes more clear when read with Philippians 2:6-8:

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man,   he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—        even death on a cross!

The only Beloved Son of God came down as a mere Man in the likeness of a sinner.

2 Corinthians 5:21
For He hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

The bush speaks of the fig leaves that Adam used to cover himself after he sinned. [Genesis 3:7]. Thus, the bush is a picture of a sinner.

The burning speaks of the fire of judgment that fell on Jesus on the Cross.

Therefore, the burning bush is a picture of Jesus on the Cross. The burning bush is 2 Corinthians 5:21.

The bush was burning but not burned out. It speaks of Jesus exhausting all of God’s fiery judgment but not consumed. It signifies that Jesus has taken away all of our sins. All the OT sacrifices were consumed by fire and were therefore not sufficient to take away all our sins.

Hence, Moses was given the Gospel when he saw the burning bush.

Hence, Moses was given the Gospel when he saw the burning bush.

The old is the new concealed. The new is the old revealed.  We read the New Testament to see what was hidden in the Old Testament.

Thanks be to God my Father for showing me more of Jesus in the Old Testament through the blessed Holy Spirit.

Labor Pains

John 16:21-22 likened Jesus' disciples to a woman in labor.
21A woman, when she gives birth to a child, has grief (anguish, agony) because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she no longer remembers her pain (trouble, anguish) because she is so glad that a man (a child, a human being) has been born into the world.

22So for the present you are also in sorrow (in distress and depressed); but I will see you again and [then] your hearts will rejoice, and no one can take from you your joy (gladness, delight).

John 16:33 is the epidural:
I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]
